EXCERPT - CHAPTER 5

Skagway, AK

     They walked down the stairs side by side talking about Sarah. Mari felt a sharp stab of guilt about the little girl she thought of as her own. “Graham, does Sarah understand that after the cruise I won’t be tucking her in every night?” She stopped mid stride.
     He turned to her and gathered her into his arms. “Don't worry sweetheart, we talked and she's happy to have you for as long as she can. He pulled back and looked directly into her eyes. "You can still see her when we get home. I promise I won’t keep you away from her ever again.” He rested his forehead on hers “I hope you will always be a part of her life.” He'd completely forgotten that he was trying very hard to leave Nevada and Mari behind by applying for jobs in other states.
     Mari pulled away with tears shining in her eyes. She didn’t trust herself to speak so she started walking again. It was too painful to contemplate how hard it would be to stay a part of Sarah’s life but not Graham’s.
