EXCERPT CHAPTER 6 - LOGAN'S LEAP

“Hey Sleeping Beauty,” he said quietly, sitting down on the edge of the bed. She was so peaceful and beautiful. He almost hated to wake her up, but she needed to eat.
Bending slightly closer to her, he reached out to touch her shoulder. The urge to kiss her swept over him and threatened to paralyze him. He couldn’t do it. It wouldn’t be right for either of them. He again reached out and shook her shoulder. “Time for dinner, Sleeping Beauty.”
Jayna stirred and her eyes began to open slowly. “You’re not a very good prince, don’t you know you are supposed to kiss me awake,” she murmured.
Logan’s mouth dropped open and he stared as she sat up and smiled at him.
With no thought to what he was doing, he reached out and pulled her close. His lips crushed hers in a desperate kiss. They dropped to the bed, his body covering hers. No matter what thoughts went through his mind, trying to get him to stop, he was able to easily push them aside.
As his mouth hungrily devoured hers, his hands roamed her upper body. Her flesh was so soft, so pliable beneath his touch. He’d forgotten how wonderful a curvy woman felt beneath his hands. It had been so long.
Jayna gasped as his hand grazed her breast.
“Did I hurt you?” he asked releasing her lips.
“No. Just super sensitive,” she moaned, pulling him back to her. Their lips met again.
Logan could no longer hear his inner voice telling him to stop as his hand maneuvered underneath her bra. The warmth and softness of her skin made him want to scream, but instead he moaned and ran his fingertips gently over her nipple. A single drop of moisture had him chuckling as his hand slid down her stomach over her hip and onto her thigh.
With the lack of skin on skin stimulation, the voices of doubt began to get louder…until Jayna’s delicate hands pulled his shirt free of his slacks and snaked up his abdomen to rest on his chest. He couldn’t breathe but he couldn’t stop kissing her either.
When Jayna’s hands buried in the hair on his chest, teasing the skin beneath he growled, only to have it muted by another kiss. He couldn’t think straight. All he wanted was…her, a woman. For the first time in years he allowed himself to want a specific person in every way possible. Jayna McIntyre. His hand moved from her stomach to her waistband and the minute his fingers breached the barrier, she stopped him.
“No Logan.”
It took him a moment to realize what she’d said as her hand clamped around his wrist.
“I don’t think you want to go there right now,” she chuckled.
Reality came back, crushing him. He lifted himself off of her and sat on the edge of the bed. “What the hell was I thinking? You’ve just given birth and you belong to someone else.”
Jayna sat up abruptly, moving next to him. “First of all, I do not belong to that monster, or anyone! I’ve hated him for years. I was just too scared to leave him. When I got pregnant and he still came after me almost every day, I knew I had to get out. Reginald Sanders hasn’t truly been my boyfriend in years. And second, my just having given birth has nothing to do with anything – except for me not being able to have sex for six weeks after!”
Logan looked at her with a smile. She was definitely a passionate woman and she’d just shot down two of his biggest arguments for staying away from her. “You deserve someone who will treat you right,” he said softly. She had looked down at her clasped hands so he lifted her chin to look into her eyes. “All I could ever give you is the physical. I’m not capable of more. I’m sorry.”
“I never said I want anything more from you, Logan. I’ve never had a good physical relationship with anyone. Maybe that’s all I want when I heal too.”
Logan stood up and pulled her to her feet. “You’d regret it,” he murmured, kissing her forehead. “Let’s head downstairs, the food is getting cold.”

EXCERPT CHAPTER 5 - LOGAN'S LEAP

Hey there, here are two small excerpts from Chapter 5! Jayna, Logan and baby CJ are really starting to bond now. I hope it shows in these heartfelt snips.  Thanks for reading and enjoy!

Christmas is over and the new year is approaching. I think...no, I KNOW this will be our year. Watch out 2015 we're coming and we're not leaving until we have everything we have worked so hard for.

“Okay,” she agreed quietly. A knock sounded on the door and she jumped.
“Hey, it’s just the food. You’re safe here,” he said, looking into her eyes. Their faces were only an inch apart and they leaned in simultaneously, their lips joining for a gentle, comforting kiss.
At the second knock they moved apart and Logan rushed to grab his wallet to get their food from the delivery guy. As they worked together to prepare plates of their favorite Chinese dishes, Logan snuck a peak at Jayna. “I’m so sorry about the kiss. It never should have happened. I usually don’t allow myself to do stuff like that.”
She looked up at him. “It’s okay. I kissed you too.”
“I feel like I took advantage of you. You just had a baby for cripes sake!”
“I think you’re angrier that you did something you don’t allow yourself to do than you are that you kissed a woman who just gave birth,” she said lightly, a smile forming on her lips.
Logan looked at her, an eyebrow quirked. “Well, first of all, you are probably right and second of all, you really are a smart ass.”
“I thought we’d already established that,” she chuckled, taking her plate to the dining room table. “So, why don’t you get involved with women?”
Logan set his plate on the table and sat down. “It’s just not for me. The whole wife, family, minivan thing just wouldn’t work for me.”
“So you just stay away from women, or you just don’t kiss them?”
“I’m a man, Jayna. Women are a temptations so I just steer clear of them. It’s that simple.”
“Well good luck with that,” she chuckled. “I wish Reginald was more like you. I would never have gotten close enough to him to end up in this mess.”
“How long were you together?” he asked quietly. “If you don’t mind my asking.”
“Four years,” she murmured. “It was great at first but then he changed. When I finally got the courage to leave, he was smacking me around on a daily basis.”
“I’m sorry,” he said, grabbing her hand. “No one should have to go through that.”
"I should have left him sooner,” she whispered through tears. “But then I wouldn’t have CJ.”
At just that moment a cry came from the bedroom. “He knows we were talking about him,” Logan chuckled. “I’ll get him. You keep eating.”

**************

Logan felt anything but safe. When she was in his arms, he felt terrified…of something. Of what? When he watched her sleep or snuggle CJ he was petrified. He felt like he may never be able to move again. No, like he may never want to move again. And earlier that night, when he’d kissed her, he felt… What? Something unknown, unheard of to him, had gripped his heart when their lips met.
“Logan. Hey Logan,” Jayna said, pulling him away from his troubling thoughts.
“What?”
“CJ’s crying, could you grab him while I visit the little girl’s room please?”
“Oh, uh yeah. Sure. “He got up off the bed and made his way around to the bassinet. “Hey my man. Are you hungry? It’s okay, Mama will be right back.” He picked him up and cuddled him on his shoulder. Sniffing the air briefly, he grabbed the diaper bag off the floor and started to figure out how on earth to change the squirming, crying little bundle.
“What are you doing?” Jayna asked as she came out of the bathroom.
“Trying to change my buddy here. He stinks!”
Jayna walked closer and gasped. “Logan, put the diaper over his…" But it was too late. He got a stream of pee right in the face.
Logan gasped and sputtered as Jayna handed him a burp cloth.
Laughter bubbled out of his mouth as he wiped his face. “It looks like I’ve been christened.”
Jayna was giggling as she finished changing CJ. “At least you remembered to put the changing pad down so the bed is safe.”
“Very funny,” he chuckled. “I’ll be right back. I need to clean up.”
When he returned with a freshly cleaned face, minus a shirt, Jayna was sitting against the headboard, eyes closed, feeding the baby. Her eyes opened and set on his torso then quickly flitted away.
“I’m making you uncomfortable,” he murmured, walking over to the closet. “I’m sorry. I won’t ever try anything…”
“It’s okay Logan. You’re not making me uncomfortable. For some reason I trust you more than I ever did Reggie. Weird huh?”
Logan put a tank top on and waked over to sit next to her again. “Logan Harper, master burper is here.”

Jayna smiled and looked into his eyes for a few moments. What did she see there? Fear? Confusion? He’d said he didn’t do relationships and family and now more than ever, she wondered why.

EXCERPT CHAPTER 4 - LOGAN'S LEAP

Here is the excerpt from Chapter 4 of Logan's Leap. I hope it shows the relationship that is building between the handsome store owner and his new runaway mom-to-be friend.Enjoy!
When his mind stared to wander places he didn’t want it to, he got up and walked over to his bookshelf. Maybe reading would get his mind off of things. He chose a book and fell back onto the bed just as the ringtone he’d set for Jayna sounded from the nightstand. His breathing quickened and he sat up, staring at the device. “Damn it! Stop enchanting me, woman!” he muttered, reaching for the phone.
“Hello.”
“Logan, it’s Jayna.”
“Hey Sleeping Beauty, shouldn’t you actually be sleeping?” He heard her sweet chuckle before she spoke again.
“I can’t sleep. I’m scared. I…I had a dream that he found us and tried to kill the baby…and you.”
“Hey. Everything’s going to be okay. I actually have some good news. I probably should have called and told you earlier, but I didn’t want to disturb mother and son bonding time.”
“Good news?” she asked skeptically. Was it even possible? “What kind of good news?”
“Reginald is back in Alaska. He ran afoul of the law when he attacked my cousin. He has to stay put until trial.”
“Which cousin?” Jayna asked with a worried tone.
“Jackson. But don’t worry he’s fine.”
“So…I’m safe for now?” she asked, unbelievingly.
“Unless he decides to be stupid. But I have a friend of the family keeping an eye on him.” Logan then heard sniffling coming over the line. “What’s wrong, Jayna?”
"Reginald’s middle name is stupid. We are nowhere near safe. He has unlimited resources, Logan. He’ll find a way.”
He sighed. “Damn it. That’s not what I wanted to hear. I thought we’d have plenty of time to get you and CJ squared away.”
“If it was just me,” she murmured. “I could change my identity and disappear forever. Logan could you…”
“No!” he interrupted. “Don’t even go there. You couldn’t give him up any more now than I could take him from you.”
“He’s my heart,” she whispered. “But he’ll never be safe with me.”
“I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that you are both safe. Together."
“Why Logan? Why are you helping us? You could just put me out on the street, or send me back to Jack and Deb. You don’t even really know us.”
“I have to,” he said softly. “What kind of monster wouldn’t help someone in need?”
“I guess I’ve only known monsters.”
Logan cringed at the thought of what she must have gone through. “I’m so sorry.”
“So what’s next?” Jayna asked, the determination coming back into her voice. “I guess we can always hope Reginald uses his brain for once.”
Logan chuckled. “I don’t think that is the best idea. Do me a favor. Think about what kind of resources he has at his disposal and tomorrow I’ll compile a list so we can give it to the PI. Then we’ll go from there.”
“Okay,” she agreed. "Thank you for everything, Logan.”
“You’re welcome. And Jayna?”
“Yeah?”
“Tell CJ…well, tell him I said hi.”
“I will, Logan. Goodnight.”
Disconnecting the call, he plugged the phone into the charger. When he lay back down on the pillow and closed his eyes, Jayna’s face loomed above him and her lips came down on his in a sweet kiss. His eyes flew open and he leapt from the bed. “God damn it! Where the hell did that come from?” He walked out to the kitchen, not sure what he was doing. Finally, he settled on a glass of water then went back to bed. The sooner he got things settled for Jayna and CJ, the better it would be. The thought of never seeing them again actually kind of made him sad. But it shouldn’t, he’d only known her for all of a couple of days. When they left, his life would return to normal. And he couldn’t wait.
He crawled under the covers and rolled onto his side. Thoughts of the enchanting Jayna McIntyre would have to stay away. Tomorrow would be a busy day and he needed to sleep.

Falling in love with Jack was easy, but there is nothing easy about staying in love with Jack Storm, arrogant rock star, while settling into a new life in Los Angeles.
The story of rock couple Jack and Marissa continues.
For Jack, Marissa and Tristan in his life changes his outlook. He feels needed. He welcomes the responsibility of a family. He embraces the love and companionship. Quickly, he whisks his son and the intriguing woman he had never forgotten to his home in LA.
To Marissa, her future seems as mysterious as dusk’s shimmering shadows beneath the surface of the luxurious guitar shaped pool. There is no doubt this could be her dream house, her dream life with the man she loves. Not so dreamy is all she is beginning to see packaged with him. The crazy hours of a very active life. The garbage behind the glam. Mostly, a moody and presumptuous rock star whose public persona is opposite of the sweet musician she fell for.
This full sized novel can stand alone, but is greatly enhanced by reading Eye of the Storms.

Excerpt

When the next text came, I jumped in excitement.
JACK
Pulling up now. Meet me outside?
3:01 AM
Hitching my robe tighter, I started from the room in stocking feet. On a whimsy, I stopped by the guest room for, and pushed my feet into, the pair of shoes I’d worn to his drop party.Storm's Eye
Mindful of my heels and my excitement, I carefully descended the stairs even though I wanted to run. As I neared the landing, I clutched the bannister with both hands and practically leaped the last two stairs.
Tearing the front door open, I pulled up short upon seeing it. In the shadows of the night, Jack was leaning against the red Lamborghini limo.
He was even hotter than he ever had been, if that were possible. Maybe it was because the fantasy limo was his backdrop. Maybe he exuded an overload of charisma from being on tour. Maybe it was because I had not seen him in more than a week.
All I knew for sure was seeing him sucked the breath into my chest before it whooshed out again as if I had been sucker punched.
Although his features were shadows from the driveway lights, I could feel his heated perusal. His arms had been crossed over his chest, and they fell to his side as he vaulted the stone steps, two at a time, toward me.
A steady breeze was blowing, and I twisted my head so that my face was clear of my hair. Holding my robe as I continued down to him, I enjoyed the tingle buzzing through my body as I watched his hair billow about.
We crushed together, and wound together. I breathed him in as my lips moved against his chest and clamped my arms tightly around him as he nearly cut off my airflow with his own embrace.Storm's Eye
My feet left the ground, and for a second, I was spinning before he set me down and our lips came together. The fiery kiss raged, we melded tight together, and our hands roamed, leaving tingling trails.
“What are you wearing, Mariss?” Jack reclaimed his tongue long enough to speak, but was back to kissing me before I could answer.
His hands had inched up the silky robe. Beneath the fabric, they alternately groped and caressed any skin left exposed by the lingerie. Fingers glided down, toying with the stockings.
Taking a step back, I made one of the boldest moves ever in my life. Especially considering this house was prone to tree lurkers, and there was surely a driver in the limo.
In one smooth motion, I had the silken belt untied, and my body shrugged from the silky shroud. Neither of us took notice of the robe catching the wind like a kite, or if it landed.
I was too busy glowing beneath Jack’s heated gaze, and Jack was too busy stroking me from head to toe with those dark eyes.
     “Holy shit, Mariss… Just…holy fuckin’ shit…”
He swooped and I was in his arms. I didn’t notice we were going down the stairs, instead of up, until I was settled in the limo.
Jack was immediately on me for another one of those mind-bending kisses. When his lips left mine, I melted into the seat, enjoying the friction of his hands over my skin, and his wandering kisses.
We were so sex starved that it was barely five minutes later when his hopeful inquiry was a pleasurable mummer against sensitive skin, “Please tell me it’s been long enough?”
     “It’s been long enough.”
In response, for the first time since that shower five years ago, there was no scramble for a tiny foil packet. Actually, I was three days short of the recommended time for the pills in the little plastic case to get in my system, but I wasn’t worried.
His unrestricted pleasure came in a loud groan and curse, then sweet seductive words. Every movement was soon pleasurable beyond words… The feeling of him completely coming inside me for the first time—unbelievable.

RUSSELL'S RETURN EXCERPT:

As soon as Miranda was on her way, Logan and Emily climbed into his SUV and headed for the lake cabin. As they arrived, the back side of the home was deserted. They quickly ran around to the front where the coroner’s van was pulling away, followed by an ambulance without its lights on.

“Oh no,” Emily whispered. Her heart was beating so fast. She couldn’t breathe. She was going to throw up. “Russell!” she screamed. “No! Russell!” It was Daniel all over again. Only she still loved Russell. But Daniel had died because of her, so the pain of his death had been just as excruciating.

Logan grabbed her so she wouldn’t flee into the middle of the crime scene. “Calm down. It’ll be okay.”

“I’m right here, Em,” Russell said stoically as he stepped out from behind a police vehicle.

A whimper escaped her as she pulled away from Logan to run to her boyfriend. He caught her in his arms.

“Oh my God! What happened? Are you okay?” she questioned, desperately checking his torso for any signs of injury.

“I’m okay,” he murmured, pulling her close again. “I didn’t get a scratch on me.”

“What happened, big brother?” Logan asked, stepping up to them...

“Hey, how is she?” Logan asked when he saw his friend leave the bedroom.
“She’s tired and I think her iron is low. The food she ate yesterday seems to have helped her dizziness, but Logan, we need to get her to the hospital now. She went from 5 cm dilated to six while I was checking her and she’s starting to feel the contractions in her abdomen.”
“Oh God! Okay um… I’ll get her into the truck. Are the roads okay? Hell, it doesn’t matter, it’s just down the street. I wonder if I should pack her bag. Oh man, we’ve got to hurry.
Nicoletta was chuckling at her old friend. “Logan, is this your baby? You’re acting like an expectant father.”
He stopped pacing and his jaw dropped. “Uh no…no, the baby isn’t mine. But Jesus this is all so, so…nerve-wracking!”
Just then, Jayna came out of the bedroom groaning and holding her stomach. “We need to go now,” she breathed. “Please!”
“Yeah, yeah. Come on,” Logan said, grabbing his keys and wallet and walking out the door.
A few moments later, he walked back inside. “I guess we should take the mom-to-be, huh?”
Nicoletta and Jayna both laughed at him. Logan put his jacket over her head and they all walked out of the nearly empty store as if nothing were out of the ordinary.

Nicoletta helped Logan get her through the six inches of fresh snow and into the truck before she headed to her own car with a promise to meet them at the hospital.

EXCERPT CHAPTER 2 - LOGAN'S LEAP

Here is an excerpt from Chapter two of Logan's Leap! Enjoy. :)

“Thank you Logan.”

“You’re welcome,” he murmured as he slipped past, brushing her pregnant belly. He stopped in his tracks. “He kicked me!”
Jayna laughed. “He did. He must like you.”
Logan hurried out of the room fighting a bout of nausea. What the Hell was that feeling he’d just had? It was warm, and fuzzy…and quite uncomfortable. When he heard her call his name, he felt like crying. He just wanted to get away from her. But he turned around and went back into the room.  “What do you need?” he asked as politely as he could muster.
“I…I have a favor to ask,” she hedged. “I… would you stay in here while I take a shower. I’m still so shaky but I really need to bathe.”  She took a deep breath and turned away. “I’m sorry. Never mind.”
Logan walked over to her and put a hand on her arm. “Go ahead and shower. I’ll stay here, just in case.”
“Are you sure?” she asked, turning to him. Tears were shining in her eyes again.
“Yeah. You deserve a shower after what you’ve been through.”
“Thank you,” she cried softly as she grabbed one of her bags and slipped into the bathroom, leaving the door ajar just enough for sound to travel out if need be.
Logan sat down on the bed, feeling somewhat like a stranger in his own bedroom. He wasn’t entirely sure what to do with himself. He picked his current read up off of the nightstand and started to scan it. Concentration was almost impossible at this point. He could only think of the beautiful, scared, totally off-limits woman standing naked in his shower. Guilt and shame made him flush. How could he even think of her like that? She was a complete stranger, pregnant with another man’s child. And he didn’t want a woman in that way, at least not emotionally. But that’s why he kept them at bay physically, so the emotions couldn’t take over. He hadn’t been with a woman in two years and although physically he missed it sometimes, he knew what he had to do to stay free, so he did it.
Just as he lay back on the bed to wait, he heard a loud noise come from the bathroom and leapt up. “Are you okay Jayna?” he yelled.
“No! Help me Logan,” she cried.
He rushed in just as she started to fall to the shower floor. Catching her just in time, he held her close to his body to try to stop her shaking. “Hey, it’s okay. I’ve got you.”
“I was just so dizzy,” she murmured, resting her head against his chest.
“Let’s get you dried off and warm,” he said, adjusting her to be able to grab a towel. He carried her out of the bathroom and laid her on the bed, covering her with the towel. “You’re staying with me, right?” he asked gently.
“Yeah,” she mumbled. “I’m so sorry. Help me sit up so I can dry myself off.”
“Sure,” he said, lifting her by the shoulders so he could sit behind her. “Go ahead and lean back against me.”
Her shaky right hand reached for the towel covering her body. She started at her arms, her breathing getting heavy.
“Hey, let me do it,” he offered. “You’re going to make yourself pass out again.”
“Please don’t,” she whimpered. “This is all embarrassing enough.”
“There’s nothing to be embarrassed about,” he whispered calmly in her ear. “You need help and I’m going to give it to you. That’s all there is to it.”
Jayna’s hands dropped from the towel and she fell back against him. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” he said, taking the towel to finish drying her off. The marks and faded bruises that lined her chest and legs made him sick to his stomach. How a man could do that to anyone, let alone the woman carrying his child, was something he couldn’t fathom. “When was the last time he hurt you?”
“He caught up with me a couple of weeks ago,” she whispered. “I was hiding in Deb’s cabin just outside of Denali. Thank God the caretaker came by when he did…”
Logan was nearly shaking with anger. “Have you had the baby checked out since – to make sure he’s not hurt?”

“The bastard made sure not to touch the baby,” she whispered.

EXCERPT CHAPTER 1 - LOGAN'S LEAP

Hey everybody! Here is a two part excerpt form Chapter 1 of Loan's Leap - This is the next installment of the Harper's Rock Novel series. Logan thinks love is for fools - Can Jayna and her baby change his mind?

Logan Harper rolled out of bed at five a.m. He was more than ready to face the day. The grocery store he owned would be taken care of by his assistant manager while he was out at the family’s now defunct ranch. Today was his day to ride his frustrations away on Digger, his horse. He dressed quickly, grabbed something to eat on the way, and left the apartment he kept above the store.
The minute he stepped outside he knew something was brewing. It was unseasonably cold for late August. He ran back into the store and up the stairs to his apartment, grabbing a jacket and gloves. Five short minutes later he was in his truck, headed just outside of town to the ranch his family owned and lived on. It hadn’t been a working ranch in quite some time, but his mother, Evelyn Harper, was turning it into quite a homestead.
His younger brother Dylan lived at the lake house. The old bunkhouse had been renovated and turned into a cottage that Evelyn now rented out.  And Logan was building a house on the ranch. He wasn’t in any hurry to finish it though. Living above his work place was convenient and since he didn’t have a family and never planned on having one, he was taking his time.  His brother Russell had just moved back home to Harper’s Rock, and would probably build his own place on the family land someday or even take over one of the other rental buildings on the property.
Logan parked his truck and entered the horse barn. There were only six horses left and the old building felt so empty. In its heyday it had been packed full of work horses. Their one ranch hand had already been there that morning so all Logan had to do was get Digger ready. He would be riding free in no time at all.

***********************

He settled her into the passenger side and propped her up with an old blanket, then he buckled her seat belt.
“Mmmm, where am I,” he heard her say softly.
“In Harper’s Rock, at my brother’s cabin,” he answered.
Her eyes shot open and she struggled against the seat belt. “Who…who are you?”
“I’m Logan Harper and I’m taking you to the hospital. You passed out and that can’t be good for your baby.”
Her hand went quickly to her stomach and she sighed. “He’s still moving,” she murmured. Looking back up at Logan, panic colored her expression. “Please don’t take me to the hospital! He’ll find me there.”
Who will find you?” The hair on the back of Logan’s neck stood on end. This woman was bad news. When she didn’t answer he lifted her face to look at him. “I asked you a question.”
“Just take me some place where no one will see me. Please. I just need to eat and then I’ll be fine. I haven’t eaten in almost two days.”
Logan sighed and ran his hand through his dark red hair. “Okay, I’ll take you to my place and feed you, but then you need to leave. I’ll give you some cash, drive you back to your car and then you can head on to the next town.”
“The car is dead,” she whispered, tears starting to fall.  "I’m supposed to look someone up here in Harper’s…I don’t feel well.”

“Breathe,” he commanded a bit harshly. “Don’t pass out on me again.”  But he was too late. Her head lolled against the seat. After checking her pulse and breathing, he ran around and got into the driver’s seat.  Since a restaurant was out of the picture because she didn’t want to be seen, he had no choice but to take her back to his apartment.  His day sure had turned south quickly.
