EXCERPT CHAPTER 3 - BREAKING FREE

NEW EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 3 OF BREAKING FREE

From the way Spencer left, it was obvious that he didn’t want to be friends and that hurt. And now I’d have to spend three months in close quarters with him knowing that our fifteen years of friendship was just a joke to him.

“Hey, can we talk?”

“Isn’t it a bit late for that?” I said turning away from where he stood.

“Come on, man. Please.”

The hurt in his voice nearly strangled me but the thought of talking to him was worse. “Please just leave me alone.”

When he sighed in defeat and sat on his bed facing away from me, I finally relaxed a little. My uncle coming into the room destroyed that small amount of peace.

“Hey guys, it’s dinner time and you’re not skipping any meal on my watch.”

I struggled up and jumped from my bunk. I wasn’t hungry but I would humor my uncle. “I’ll go find Elliot.”

“Now wait a minute, Zay. For now, at least, you and Spencer will be eating meals together. I need to know you are at least capable of being civil to each other so you don’t ruin the camp experience for everyone around you.”

“Seriously, Uncle Tucker? I think you watched The Parent Trap one too many times as a kid.”

A chuckle came from across the room and I looked to see Spencer smiling at me. We’d each watched both versions of the movie a time or two ourselves. Would putting the two fighting kids together all the time work in our case or was it just movie magic? If my old friend kept laughing at my jokes and smiling at me with his cute dimples, it just might. And since when had the word cute come to mind when I saw those deep recesses in his cheeks?

I am proud to introduce Breaking Free, my next novel release. I hope you will pre-order a copy or pick one up on release day!

BLURB:
Isaiah Masterson - Can you believe it? First, my lifelong best friend leaves town without so much as a goodbye and stops my world cold. Fast forward one miserable year and my parents are divorcing and sending me to my uncle’s wilderness summer camp for three months. At seventeen, the last things I need are campfire songs and pine needle crafts. There was no way life could ever get better. That is until my missing best friend walks into my cabin at Western Breezes Summer Youth Camp and I realize that I have more than friendship on my mind.

Spencer Jackson - Some might think the worst day of my seventeen years was the day I left my best friend and long-time secret crush without ever saying goodbye. But that wasn’t it by a long shot. The worst day of my life was dark, evil and the reason I couldn’t let Isaiah know I was leaving. As my parents drove us out of Los Angeles, my life as I knew it, as I hoped it would be, was over. I could never go back. Or so I thought until my former crush showed up in my cabin at the wilderness camp. I’d been given a second chance to create the future I wanted. But I wasn’t so sure I could break free of the past, even with Isaiah’s help and the promise of a love I never thought possible.

CHAPTER 1 EXCERPT:

“So, this is home sweet home.” Elliot stood aside to let me in. “It’s not great but it works, I guess.”

“It’s not so bad,” I said taking in the room. There were two sets of bunk beds, a table and chairs, and two dressers. “Please tell me we have our own bathroom.”

“Yep. Through that door,” he said pointing “And that door is a shared closet. This year there will only be three of us in here. You, me, and a guy named…”

A loud bell rang and Elliot switched gears. “Campers are starting to arrive. Let’s go see how many cute girls we’ll have to choose from this year.”

I really wasn’t in the mood to check out girls. In fact, I hadn’t been since…well, in quite a while anyway. I wanted to get unpacked and get on with my summer. “No thanks. I’m just going to stay here. I’ll catch up with you later.” I suddenly felt so worn down.

It didn’t take long for me to pick a bunk – the top one on the right-hand side - and unpack my things. When my head was buried in the closet, putting my jacket on a hanger, I heard the door open. “Change your mind, huh?” It was either that or Elliot had already found a girl and was bringing her around to introduce her.

“Uh no. I’m sorry…”

My back stiffened and I stood up straight. That voice was as familiar to me as my own and it wasn’t my cousin’s. “What the fuck are you doing here?” I snarled, turning to face the person I liked and hated most in the world.

Holiday preparations went on as December started and by the time the kids were out of school for winter break, everyone was looking forward to their first Christmas together.
The last day of school for JC and the kids was December 18th. After classes, JC drove them home to find Trevor sitting quietly on the couch waiting.
“What’s wrong?” JC asked, sitting next to his boyfriend. There was something bad definitely going on.
“Is your phone off?”
JC took his phone out of his pocket and checked. “The battery died. Why, Trevor? What’s going on.”
Trevor looked at him, his eyes clouded with worry. “Your dad was trying to call you. He called me instead. I’m so sorry, James.”
“What?”
“Your mother was killed by a drunk driver last night.”
“Huh…” he said, leaning back against the couch. “I…I’m not sure what to think.”
“I’m sorry. I can’t imagine…you should call your dad,” he said, handing over his phone.
“Yeah…okay.” James walked stunned into the kitchen and dialed his father.
“Hello,” Cameron Croft answered.
“Hey, Dad. I just got the message.”
“Yeah, I tried calling your phone but…”
“My phone’s battery died,” he said softly. “What happened?”
Cameron Croft turned off the television show he was watching and sat quietly in his chair. “She was crossing the street in front of your aunt’s house and a drunk driver hit her. He was going forty in a twenty-five.
“God! I’m not sure what to say or to feel.”
“I know the feeling son. I was married to her for so many years, but I can’t bring myself to feel like I think I should. I mean, I’m sorry she’s dead but…I just don’t know.”

“Yeah. I feel the same. I guess I should come back for the service. Do they have anything planned yet?” He knew his mother’s family always had the service planned as soon as possible.
“Yeah, It’s the 21st at ten a.m. in Sheridan. If you come here and get me we can go together.”
“I…I don’t know if I can, Dad. Can I meet you there?”
“Yeah son, but it might help if you come home. You could go to his family or even to the cemetery and say goodbye.”
“I know I should, but…but I just can’t. Not yet.”
“Okay,” Cameron said quietly. “I won’t push you. I’ll see you in Sheridan. Maybe we can have lunch after the funeral.”
“You know we will,” James said with a smile. “I’ll see you soon, Dad. I love you.”
“I love you too, son.”
JC hung up the phone and wandered back out to the front room where Trevor was talking to his sons. They still didn’t know about their grandmother because they were shoveling snow when JC had come inside. “Hey, boys. I just talked to Grandpa Croft. Your grandmother passed away last night. She was hit by a drunk driver.”
“Wow,” Michael whispered.
“I’m sorry, Dad,” Benjamin said. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, son. Just in shock a little bit. I’ll be going to the funeral. I’ll leave the day after tomorrow and head down.”
“Do you want us to come,” Trevor asked, quietly.
“No. I’d appreciate it if you could stay here with the boys. I don’t want them to have to be subjected to all of the crap from Mom’s family.”
“Okay.”
JC started to walk from the room to call Jenny then turned back. “Let’s go out to eat tonight. I don’t feel like cooking. I’ll be ready in a few minutes.”
Dinner and the time at home after were somber as everyone struggled with their own thoughts and feelings on the Tragedy. Trevor wasn’t sure how JC was truly reacting, so he just watched and tried to play along. By the time they headed upstairs to bed he wasn’t sure how to approach things. Should he try to get him to talk or let JC make the first move?
“Is there anything I can do?” Trevor was in bed when JC finished up in the bathroom.
“I’m not sure. I don’t know what the fuck to feel. I know I should be sad but I’m not sure I can be. I loved her once, but now…I just don’t fucking know.”
“I’m sorry,” Trevor murmured, holding his arms open.
JC moved into them and buried his head in his shoulder. “I feel so guilty,” he finally murmured.

“Are you sure you want to go alone. I’d be glad to come with you.”
JC pulled away and moved onto his back. “I’m sure…I don’t want you exposed to her hate or her family’s disdain. It would only serve to tarnish our relationship.”
“Okay,” Trevor agreed. “But maybe while you’re there you should stop in Harper’s Rock and say goodbye to someone else.”
“You sound like my Dad,” JC complained. “I just don’t know if I can.”
“Why not?”
JC turned away from him. “I’m scared, and it’s too painful.”
Trevor reached out and touched his back. “You need to do it…for us. For our future. Please.”
“Okay,” JC whispered. “Goodnight Trev.”
“Goodnight James. I love you.”
“I love you too.”

By the time JC was done taking pictures he was steeped in guilt. Why, every time he had a new experience, did he wonder what Ben would think about it. He was in paradise with the most amazing man he’d met in years, one he felt comfortable saying the words I love you too, and here he was thinking about Ben. But he and Ben had talked many times about the different kinds of places they wanted to see together…and this was one of those kinds of places.
Sometimes he wished that he and Ben had only been best friends, that they had never fallen in love. But that in itself brought more guilt because he wouldn’t trade their time together for anything in the world. His childhood had made him who he was today. He was a successful, well-loved teacher, a father to two amazing kids, and what some said was a good man. His main fault was his inability to let go of things he’d once loved. But at least he had loved. At least he was capable of love – complete, absolute love.
“Hey, how long have you been back?” Trevor asked as he walked into the main room of their villa.
“Not long. Are you ready for lunch?”
“Yeah…is everything okay?”
“Yeah, after last night how could it not be.” But JC knew he didn’t sound convincing.
“We’ll talk while we eat,” Trevor said matter-of-factly.
They decided to eat their lunch outside on the beach. It was a beautiful, sunny day out and the ocean breeze was light and would keep them cool.
Trevor passed JC the sweetener for his tea then brought up his boyfriend’s mood. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m pretty sure you won’t want to hear it.”
“Now that you’ve said that I definitely want to hear it.”
With a sigh, JC set his burger back on his plate and looked out over the ocean. “I’m doing it again. I was walking along the beach taking pictures and wishing you were there with me…you know, the whole romantic scene of a couple walking along the beach hand in hand. But then my thoughts shifted, and I wondered what Ben would think of this place. What it would have been like if we’d been able to come here.”
Trevor shifted in his seat and cleared his throat. He was obviously uncomfortable with what his boyfriend was saying. “I…Do you wish you’d come here with him instead of me?”
“No!” JC was quick to answer. “No, not at all. I only want to be here with you, but I wonder what things would have been like if it had ended differently for Ben. It’s the same old shit that gets in the way every fucking time!”
“I’m not going to say that it doesn’t feel like a knife was sliced across my chest just now,” Trevor said softly. “But I understand what you mean.”
“I’m sorry.”
Trevor nodded and took a bite of his food. Not that it had any taste anymore. But he knew he needed to eat. JC did the same.”
“I wonder, all the time, why he died. If I knew that, if I knew what happened, I could stop thinking about him. He was fine one day and the next he went up to the cabin and killed himself. I truly believe he was fine when he drove away from Harper’s Rock that day. What happened in those few hours before he pulled the trigger.”
Trevor reached over, tentatively, and touched his hand. “Maybe you should go talk to the Harpers. Maybe they can help you.”
“But they don’t know,” he whispered.
“But maybe the mutual hurt, their mutual questions can help you. It would be worth a shot.”
“I don’t know if I can.”

Trevor looked away, over at another couple walking along the main beach. “You’ll have to eventually. Sooner rather than later please.”
“You’re going to walk away after all aren’t you?”
Trevor was quiet, trying to control his breathing. “No. I love you and I’ll stick by you for as long as I can, but this is the first time I’ve ever been hurt by something you said about Ben. I’m afraid it will become a habit.”
“I’m so sorry. I thought things were getting better, then all of a sudden…”
“All of a sudden you’re doing stuff that you once wanted to do with him and it’s affecting you. I understand, but it still hurts that I’m not the only one on your mind. Do you think of him when we…when we make love?”
“No. I thought only of you and how much I love you and how good you make me feel.”
“Good. Maybe because that is something you and Ben actually did together?”
“Could be. I’ll try not to let you know when this happens in the future. I don’t like hurting you.”
Trevor actually chuckled. “You’re not a very good actor, I can tell when you are upset even if you are trying to hide it. Just promise me that you’ll be open and honest and we’ll talk it out. Okay?”

“Yeah,” JC said, taking Trevor’s hand and kissing his palm. “I promise.” But he knew from that point on he would do everything he could do to be a better actor. He couldn’t stand the thought of hurting the man he loved that much.

JC knew the minute he stepped into the club that this definitely wasn’t his scene. His friend Martin was so happy that he’d decided to date again after breaking up with the man he’d been seeing for the last two years. Aaron…he needed to forget the emotionally destructive poison that was Aaron.

At thirty-two, after having been married and raising two kids, all the men who packed the crowded club seemed like babies to him. There had to be another way to meet someone. Maybe he should wait and let things fall where they may. There was bound to be a gay man at the golf course, at the gym, or hell, even at the supermarket, wasn’t there?

The minute a leather clad man with nipple piercings approached him, he turned and fled the building, bumping into Martin as he hurried outside.

“Whoa, where do you think you’re going?” Martin asked, reaching for his arm to turn him back toward the bar.

“This is not my scene, man, “JC said, jerking his arm away. “I’m not going back in there so a leather clad freak can hit on me.”

“I thought you wanted to have some fun!” Martin pouted. “This is the perfect place to let loose and get back into the groove.”

“This is not the groove I want to get into. I’ll take my chances at the supermarket.”

Martin stuck his nose in the air and turned away from JC. After a minute he turned back to him, leveling a haughty gaze at his friend. “Fine! Let’s just go to the boring bar and have a couple of drinks. Nothing going on there but playing pool and…and conversation!” With a look of disgust, he grabbed JC’s arm and dragged him down the street.

The outside of the bar was nice and pretty unassuming. It was an older building that spoke of many generations past, back when Denver had a western flare. It wasn’t one of the new, modern buildings that seemed to have overtaken the city. Except for the name lit up in bright green neon above the door, you would almost move past it without knowing it was even there. “Come on, Mr. Stick in the Mud,” Martin mumbled. “Let’s get this over with.”

“Are you sure this is the right kind of bar?” JC asked as they stepped inside. But he immediately knew he needn’t have asked that question. The long wood bar was crowded with males from every walk of life – from suits to battered jeans and work boots, it was a veritable buffet of men.

Tables were scattered around the back of the room but only one of them was in use. A group of men in dress clothes sat around a rectangular one laughing and joking. The man who held court at the head of the table made JC’s stomach lurch. Dr. Trevor Alexander…the man who had let his daughter die.

“You son of a bitch! You’re lying. What the hell did you do to my daughter?” All JC could hear was his racing heart. All he could see was the room spinning and blurring before him. He had to regain control.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Croft…”

Rage built inside JC and he could no longer control it. The asshole standing in front of him said his Abby was dying. She’d been fine just an hour before. “What the hell did you do to my daughter,” he repeated, stepping toward the doctor. His wife’s firm grip on his arm was the only thing that kept him from wrapping his hands around the man’s throat and putting him in the same state his daughter was in. His Abigail was dying and it was all Dr. Alexander’s fault.

“Are you okay?” Martin asked when he noticed his friend’s startled expression.

“Yeah…uh, yeah. I’m fine. Let’s grab a table.” The memory still haunted him from time to time and now with the good doctor mere feet away, he hadn’t been able to stop it. Why was that son of a bitch still happy and breathing?

“We’d better do it now; this place will be getting overrun in about a half-hour.”

The two men sat across from each other making sure to let anyone who may be watching know that they weren’t there together. A waiter in tight jeans and a painted-on t-shirt hurried over to them, his look of boredom quickly fading to be replaced by a genuine smile. “My name is Patrick. I’ll be grabbing your drinks tonight. What can I get for you?”

“I’ll have a beer,” JC murmured. “Whatever’s cold and in a bottle.”

“And you?” The waiter asked with an extra special smile to Martin. “What can I get you?”

“I’ll have the same…and hurry back, I’m really thirsty.”

The waiter winked at Martin and headed for the bar.

“Well it looks like at least one of us is going to get lucky tonight,” JC chuckled, his eyes periodically moving to the table across the room. Not that he was there specifically for a one night stand – he wanted to meet someone he could get to know. One night stands were not on his radar anymore.

Martin huffed and shrugged. “I’m here to get you laid, not myself…but if it happens, I won’t complain,” he chuckled. “And you seem to have set your sights on that amazing specimen of a man over at that other table.”

JC quickly brought his gaze back from across the room. “Him? No way in Hell!”

“Oh? Do you know him?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I do,” JC said softly. “He was the doctor who worked on Abigail in the ER.” And as Martin opened his mouth to speak, James put his hand up. “I know, I know, he didn’t kill Abigail. But you know what? It sure as hell feels that way when someone tells you that there is nothing more that they can do and that your four-year-old child will probably not make it through the night.”

“If you truly know that, then you should have nothing against him,” Martin said, matter-of-fact. “He’s hot, you’re hot. He’s gay, you’re gay. I don’t see the problem. Go over and reintroduce yourself.”

JC warred with the thoughts going through his head. A very small part of him knew that Martin was right, but he couldn’t… “Nah, I said some pretty nasty things the last time I saw him, besides last he knew Jenny and I were happily married. He thinks I’m straight.”

“If you ask me,” Martin said, tossing his head. “That gives you two even more to talk about. I’ve got a good feeling about this.”

“No,” JC snarled.

The bar quickly started to fill up just as Martin had said it would. Very attractive men were everywhere, and JC knew he could probably have his pick. But the moment he’d walked in and seen the doctor he’d lost interest in the whole evening. In two short days, it would be the eighth anniversary of his baby girl’s death.

Beer after beer, he sat and alternated between talking with Martin and looking over at the good doctor and his friends. Martin was right about one thing; Trevor Alexander was hot as hell! He hadn’t been in a position to notice that before. Even in his stuffy clothes, JC could see how taught and perfectly formed his body was. The way his muscles stretched his dress shirt was practically sinful. But he wasn’t interested in that particular sin.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BABY BOOMER AND MATURE COUPLE ROMANCES

THE IMPORTANCE OF BABY BOOMER AND MATURE COUPLE ROMANCES

There are a lot of different kinds of romances  - Contemporary, Historical, Erotic, and New Adult to name a few.  Most of these stories involve characters in the 18-29 age range.  With people waiting longer and longer to get married in this day and age, where is all the love for people over 30?  Come on people, they need love too!

Now, I know you are saying that people in their 30s and 40s are not baby boomers and you are one hundred percent correct. I’m not sure what else to call those that don’t fall into the baby boomer range (born between 1946-1964). I have seen books out there about 40-year-olds that are called baby boomer romances , and yes, it is a pet peeve of mine. I hate it. Don’t do it.  Please, just don’t!

So, what do we call these 30-49 year old love stories?  Generation X/Y romances, Mature romances, Older Adult romances – to me, none of those titles seem to really fit. Most people don’t even know what generation X/Y is, and when I hear the term Mature romances I think of books that should only be read by mature audiences. And that leaves Older Adult romances which first of all, is a mouthful and second of all, is actually quite boring. Regardless of whether they have names, I will continue to write them. And there are a few good reasons to do that.

The first reason I think romances about older characters is important is because quite a few people have written them in the past and as a general rule they aren’t very well received. And it isn’t because people don’t like them, it’s just that they don’t know how or where to find them. And of course, book sellers don’t make it easy either. I have typed in ‘mature romances’ into Amazon search and it comes up with a few of the kinds of books I’m looking for but many of them are just romances for those over 18 to read. Sigh…Let’s try again. We can type in ‘baby boomer romance’ and again we get a few of the kinds of books we are looking for but also many books about babies and economic booms. Sigh again.  I know, through research, that there is an audience out there. We just need the chance to reach them. I, as an Indie author, might not be the one to do that, but I sure as hell will try.

The second reason I think these types of books are important is that older people need a voice. I am in my forties and truthfully I don’t always want to read about 18 to 24-year-olds angsting over everything in life. I have lived a lot in my 45 years, and I love to read about people going through things that I go through or that I will soon go through. And believe me, there are plenty of other 40-plus people out there who feel the same way. Admit it, when you hear about a 64-year-old person, you think of a lady/man with white hair, a house dress/pants up to his armpits sitting in rocking chairs on the porch reading news papers and knitting.  But in all actuality, people in their sixties can be alive, vibrant and sexy. One of my baby boomer romances features a character named Jack. He’s still trim and muscular from his work, he’s covered in tattoos and scars, and is still able to bring his girlfriend to her knees.  (Yes, I’m being a bit coy here because what I really wanted to say is not appropriate for all audiences.)  Bottom line is that people of all ages are interested in books with older characters, and some of those that haven’t even tried might find that they like them. And I want to be one of the people to give these amazing heroes and heroines a voice…an accurate voice.

The third reason I think these types of books are important is because  the underdog is usually worth fighting for, and in the genre of romance, baby boomer/older  romances are just that. I believe it is time for a change.  New Adult and Erotica stories have had a great run at the forefront of the genre, but I think there is plenty of room to give another sub-genre a chance to shine.  It’s all cyclical and now is the time in the cycle for NA and Erotica to move along to the next step in the circle and let Baby Boomer/Mature love stories rule for a bit. They’ll get their chance again. Besides, everybody loves second chances, and these older characters are pretty much guaranteed to be involved in their second chance at love. And despite the images we have in our head about older people, they can have some pretty damn good sex that will make you just as weak in the knees as a scene involving a couple of twenty-year-olds.  Don’t believe me?  Stay tuned!

REVIEW OF "UNDER THE SUN" BY JUDE OUVRARD

REVIEW -

I met this author through facebook and her excitement over her first novella was catching! I could not wait to read it and I was lucky enough to get a copy not too long after it debuted. I must tell you, I was not disappointed. Under The Sun is a beautiful story about falling in love and healing. Jude Ouvrard brings these characters to life in the perfect way. I'm often worried about character development in shorter works but this is done perfectly because you also have the joy of falling in love with the minor characters peppered throughout. Under the Sun is a powerful, emotional, sweet and sexy read you won't want to miss. I can hardly wait to read more by this author. And guess what? You won't have to wait long.

AUTHOR BIO - Jude was born and raised in a small village named Lacolle. She now lives in Montreal, Canada. She is the proud mother of a beautiful four year old son, and has spent the last twelve years with her partner, Cedric. French is her native language, but she prefers to write in her second language, English.

Besides working full time for a Title Insurance Company and being a mother, Jude has a passion for books, both reading and writing them.

Her first novella, Under the Sun was published at the end of July 2013. It is part of a Beach Read called Heat Wave. Her second novella, Wonderland, will be out in October and its part of a Fall anthology. Both will be published with Renaissance Romance publishing.

She is currently working on a novel called Body, Ink, and Soul. She is hoping to publish by November or December 2013.

How about an excerpt from this wonderful novella?  Here you go! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

EXCERPT - It might have been my imagination, but when our eyes met, I felt something stirring inside me. I stared at her, wondering what had just happened, and I could still feel the tingling warmth on my skin. There was something between us, but I didn’t know quite what. Everything felt right, like we were supposed to be together.
Tracey looked away, breaking our connection. “Do you need help with anything?”
“Nope. Everything's ready.” Even though I could have stared at her all night, I didn’t want to ruin the evening. So I turned my attention to our dinner and got the bruschetta and the garlic bread on the table.
“Mmm, it looks delicious, chef.” Tracey laughed. She had quite the spirit, and unlike so many women, she didn’t appear to be complicated.
When I placed the shrimp Alfredo linguini on the table, Tracey literally licked her lips. “I think I might join you for dinner every night. It smells so good.”
“I would love that,” I replied. “The company would be nice.”
Tracy was unsettling to me, causing me to lose tact and intelligence.
For the most part, we ate in silence. Often I found myself just staring at her, like she was going to run away if I wasn’t watching her. I’d remembered her features from the first time I saw her, but she seemed different now, almost serene and calm. The first time I’d met her, I had seen the love and devotion for Mrs. Howard in her eyes, but now they were tired and sad. Regardless of how beautiful I thought she looked tonight, I wanted to be able to change that for her, to bring happiness to her eyes.
The first time I’d seen Tracey, her blond hair had been a lot shorter, too. It had reached just below her ears, but now, it hung down to the middle of her back. She’d been wearing yoga pants with a Hello Kitty T-shirt. At the time, I thought it was adorable, young and fun, but tonight she looked more mature and sexy. She was perfect.
“Earlier, you mentioned that you're here for the summer.” It was the best way I could think to start a conversation.
“Yeah. I needed some time away from home. The past few years have been rough. What about you?”
Rough? What did Tracey mean? But instead of pushing her to clarify, I heard myself rambling out an answer to her question. “I'm here for the summer, too, but I might have to leave on a few business trips.”
“Oh, that’s great. I took a couple months off work. Believe me, I needed it.”
“Do you mind me asking why?”
“Oh, sure. I can't just give you little pieces here and there and not tell you everything. I spent the last few years taking care of my grandmother. She passed away recently. Beth had Alzheimer’s, and by the end, she was so lost inside herself. She could remember the house where she grew up in Salt Lake City, but she couldn't remember who I was. It's a terrible disease. She lost all her knowledge and independence. Even simple things like going to the bathroom or changing her clothes were a challenge.
“Sometimes, Beth thought I was her sister Amanda. And there were days when she thought I was her caregiver. Those days were the worst; she didn't want help, and she thought she was doing just fine, so I had to deal with her constant mood swings and irritability. Oh, and the language that came out of her mouth? Well, let’s just say that my grandmother wouldn’t have used those words.

WILD WAVES EXCERPT - CHAPTER 1

Thomas heard the Mannon's before he saw them as he and Abigail stepped onto the ship. He hung back and let the long unseen daughter reunite with her family. And of course there was no avoiding setting eyes on the love of his life and the bane of his existence. As Vanessa waited her turn to hug Abigail, Thomas took in the sight of her from behind a luggage rack. She looked more beautiful than ever. Her wavy red hair hung down past her waist now and her big green eyes were as bright as ever. And damn, her soft, perfect curves were a bit more rounded with maturity. She was his vision of absolute perfection. The only thing different now was the subtly sad look that briefly swept across her face once in awhile as she looked around her. He couldn't help but wonder if it was because of his impending presence on her family's vacation. He suddenly couldn't stand the thought of disrupting her reunion with Abigail, so he quickly slipped away.

**********
             Vanessa took her seat and watched as Olivia and Mari greeted and fussed over their longtime friend. She knew she should say something, but the words just wouldn't come, not even a hello or a how are you old friend. Maybe it was the near glare Thomas was throwing her way. Or maybe it wasn't a glare, maybe he was just appraising her harshly as his eyes moved over her.  Something about her obviously didn't make him happy anymore, but she fondly remembered a time when everything about her had pleased him.
           Vanessa watched as he kept his eyes on her from across the table, and as he leaned toward Abigail and rested his hand on her arm. "Haven't seen you since we boarded Abby. Is the most beautiful Mannon sister enjoying the cruise so far?" Then his eyes shifted back to Vanessa and he winked. How dare he!
            Abigail leaned close to him to whisper in his ear."Using me to make her jealous, well played."
            Thomas grinned and caught Vanessa's eye. He winked again.
            She was fuming and trying not to let it show. There was no way there was something going on between Abby and Thomas. Was there?  No, there couldn't be, Abigail had brought her own man with her. He was supposedly only her personal assistant, but there was no mistaking how they looked at each other. So what the hell kind of game was Thomas Playing?
            Vanessa's attention was momentarily taken off of her former crush when Mari's soon to be ex Graham, his seven year old daughter Sarah, and his mother Eleanor unexpectedly arrived at the table. As soon as everyone had calmed down, her eyes automatically settled on Thomas again. If he was going to play a game with her, then she was going to make sure she won it. "So Tommy, I see The Marines hasn't changed you at all. Is that a pimple on your cheek," she teased.
           "Think you need glasses Red, that's a battle scar." he returned.
           Vanessa looked at him and smirked. "Having sex with a teenage girl in the pool house isn't war Paulson. She was probably clawing at your face to get you off of her." She swore she heard her mother laugh snort but didn't dare look her way. It was mortifying to think that Charlotte might know exactly what they had done in the pool house five years previously.
           "Nah, this was from the real war Vanessa," he said running his finger along the scar. "The girl you were referring to," he lowered his voice, "well you know, she just laid there like a dead..."
           Jackson choked on his soup, interrupting the sparring between his sister and best friend. Thomas smacked him on the back until he caught his breath. "You okay man?"
          "Yeah, didn't really appreciate the visual of my sister dude!"
          "You two are disgusting!" Vanessa seethed, looking around to see if anyone else had heard. She breathed a sigh of relief, noticing everyone was otherwise occupied. That is until her mother turned to her and winked. Oh God, how mortifying! Was there anything Charlotte Mannon didn't know?

REVIEW OF "LANDSLIDE" BY NJ COLE

This is my first ever review on this blog. I think this is something I will try to do whenever possible. This first book is Landslide by NJ Cole. It is an erotic romance and although my post will be rated G, the book is not. The story contains elements that will not be suitable for all audiences (BDSM).

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I started out not knowing what to expect with this book. It was one I had liked the description of and put in my wishlist and I was definitely happy to be given a chance to read and review it. I must say that I didn't know whether to expect to just like the book or to love it. There are some elements in it that would not jive with my lifestyle but I love reading about so I didn't know where my emotions would lie when I finished it.

I absolutely love, love, love this novel. The story of forbidden love is sweet, hot and believable, which I find isn't always the case in forbidden love stories, and did I mention that it is hot! At first you are thinking that these two characters REALLY SHOULDN'T be together, but about 1/4 of the way into their first major scene together the chemistry just wins you over and you can literally feel them falling for each other.

~~~ Might contain a bit of a spoiler as to general aspects of the story (not specifics) read next part with caution~~~
NJ Cole has a talent for telling a great story with just the right amount of all of the important elements of a good romance/love/erotica story. The initial physical attraction, the aspect of 'is he or isn't he truly falling for her' and vice versa, the stumbles along the way, the realization that the relationship is so much more than expected. It's all in there and it is written and pulled together very well. Add in little twists and turns along the way and you have a great read. The fact that it is one of the hottest stories I've ever read doesn't hurt either. I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking for a great love story filled with eroitc, wonderful 'scenes'. I can't wait to read other books by this talented author.
            They danced four songs wrapped in each other’s arms before deciding to find a table to rest at. Just as their drinks arrived, Jackson walked up. “Would I be interrupting something if I joined you?” he asked, his voice sounding somewhat melancholy.
           “Sit down little brother.” Abigail invited. “I haven’t seen you in five years and even I know you were just not yourself. What’s going on?”
            “Jackson sighed, “I can’t talk about it yet, but everyone will know soon. And no, I’m not sick or dying or anything bad like that.”
             Abby breathed a sigh of relief. “Well that’s good to know. I hope everything else is okay.”
            "It will be,” her brother answered with a smile. “Now what about you? Why did you lock yourself away from us for five years? We saw you for a half hour at the airport two years ago. You even stopped calling.”
             “Jack don’t,” Sam warned. “She’ll tell you when she can.”
             “It’s okay Sam,” I think I’m ready to try.”
             “Good,” he smiled, taking her hand to offer reassurance.
             “Okay Jack,” she started. “Have you heard of S.A. Mann, the crime thriller author?”
             “Of course I have!” he enthused. “He’s one of my favorite author’s.  I’ve read everything he’s written.”
             Abby chuckled. “Well, he is actually me, and Sam.”
             “Wow. Really?” My big sister is a famous author. How cool is that!”
             Abigail cleared her throat. “Jack when you said you had read everything we’ve written did that include the eBook short stories?”
            "Yeah, of course. I have every story and every book you guys have ever written on my e-reader. Why?”
            “My Personal Horror,” was all she said. It didn’t take her brother long to fill in the blanks. Jack blinked a few times and swallowed hard before he looked up to catch her eye.
             “I’m so sorry Abby. Please tell me some of the story was exaggerated for dramatic effect?”
             “I can’t do that Jack,” she whispered grabbing his shaking hand with hers. That is exactly what happened to me, every last detail.”
             "Oh God. I feel sick," Jackson squeezed her hand and took a few deep breaths. “I’m so sorry for everything I said, for every bad thought I had when you didn’t return my phone calls…”
            “It’s okay Jack. It wasn’t your problem, it was mine. But I’m getting better now.” She sighed. “There is a bit more to the story though.”
**********
           “Jesus Abby, I’m so sorry.”
           “Don’t go there Sam, it’s not your fault.”
           "I know, I just get so angry at that bastard sometimes.”
          “Do you want to see the scars?” she whispered as she started to undress.
          “Yes.”
          “Right here,” she said turning her head and moving her hair aside.
          Sam swallowed down his anger and turned his attention to the scars that Abby pointed out, raining gentle caressing kisses on every one of them, over her entire body.
          “These are no longer places where you have trauma scars, but places where you've been thoroughly loved,” he whispered as he kissed the last scar behind her other ear.
          “Samuel West,” she murmured with tears in her eyes. “You are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I love you more with every breath I take.”
         “I could say the same Abigail,” he smiled, just before he captured her mouth in a kiss.
STORMY SEAS EXCERPT - CHAPTER 9
          “Hey, you okay?” Sam asked, noticing the serious look on her face.
           She smiled ”Yeah, I think things are going to be perfect now.”
          “Mmm, I’m glad,” he said, kissing her. “Now go take a shower, lunch is in an hour and I have some phone calls to make myself.”
           “By the way, don’t change yet,” she called as she shut herself in the bathroom. Sam looked down at the towel wrapped round his hips and smiled.
            Abigail hurried through her shower and came out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel. She was carrying a brush. “Oh my God! My hair is so knotted from the wind, how are you with a brush?”
            “I’m actually pretty handy, at least according to my cousin Sonja,” he laughed. “Come over here and sit down.”
            “Abby sat on the loveseat next to Sam and handed him the brush. She sighed as he gently started to work the knots out. “I should probably get it cut now that I’m wearing it down.”
            “That might be an idea. You can have a fresh new look.”
            “Or I could just have you brush my hair for me,” she whispered. “This feels so good.”
            Sam swept her hair to the side and kissed her neck. “That’s an idea too” he whispered back.”
           “Sam, could you…” she sighed.
           “What Abby, what do you want me to do?” he asked turning her to face him. “I need to hear the words Bibi, so I know it's without a doubt what you want.”
**********
            Abigail felt warm breath on her neck and fought down the panic that rose in her throat.
           “It’s just me Abby,” Sam whispered, pulling her close. He felt her let out a shaky breath. “I’m sorry I scared you.”
           “It’s okay, I’m just not used to waking up with a naked man breathing down my neck,” she laughed.
           “Well turn around and I’ll breathe down your front,” he offered. “And anything else you might want me to do.”
            She rolled over in his arms and looked into his eyes.
            He kissed her on the tip of her nose. “I could get used to waking up next to you.”
           “I hope you do,” she whispered.
           “So you're okay?” he asked, running his hand along her side and over her hip.
           “I’m better than okay Sam, I feel so alive!” she enthused. “What we did last night was incredible. I won’t regret it for even a moment.
           “I love you Abigail, so much.”
           “I love you too Sam, now kiss me and let's do it all over again.”
STORMY SEAS - EXCERPT CHAPTER 8
        Dressed in only the pair of shorts he'd been sleeping in, Sam sat on his bed reading through a paper copy of chapter twelve while Abigail typed away for over half an hour.
         “You want to help me fix this up now?” she asked. She'd also changed into her shorts and tank top.
         “Sure, let me have it,” he said reaching for the computer.
         “It’s dying, you'll have to come over here by the plug.”
         Sam sat up and pushed himself up off his bed. “I'll be right back,” he groaned, heading into the bathroom. He went in there more to compose himself than to use the facilities because he knew what kind of scene she'd been writing. She always got nervous and bounced her foot when she wrote a sex scene, and the thought of proofing it, sitting all squished up against her on that tiny twin bed, made it hard to breathe. Then he had an idea. “Hey Bibi, get up for a second,” he called from the bathroom.
         “Why?"
         “I’m going to push the beds together until bed time. Give us more room to work.” He could stay on his own side and still reach the laptop, and maybe he could make it through the rest of the night.
         Sam leaned back against the wall to the right of the window and Abby was sitting cross legged on her side of the now large bed.
        “Okay, let me read it,” he offered, reaching for the computer again. Abby handed it over and he started to read. She'd seamlessly added ten pages and he was right, it was the hottest sex scene he'd ever read.
        “Wow, Bibi that adds a whole new dimension to the story. It’s perfect. There is only one small thing I would change.”
        “Okay, what?” She asked moving up to the head of the bed to sit next to him.
         His voice actually shook as he pointed out the small change he wanted to make. Having her so close made him want to take her in his arms and replay the scene she’d written. But that would definitely be too much too soon.
         Abby took the laptop and made the changes. “Now, it’s perfect."
         “I agree!” Sam enthused.
         “I was afraid it would be too much,” she whispered. “It borders on erotica.”
         "Yeah but it’s not quite there so it’s perfect for our book.”
         Abigail chuckled and leaned her head on Sam’s shoulder. “Too bad they both die a horrible death two pages into the next chapter.”
         “You are so cruel, killing off a young couple who have just had the best sex of their lives, and to top it off you made me leave dinner the other night because I joked about borrowing your underwear. Such cruelty!"
          Abigail laughed. “I'm so sorry,” she gasped, trying to catch her breath. She turned to look at Sam. “I was such a bitch that night.”
           “You were,” Sam agreed staring into her eyes. “But everyone gets to be once in awhile.”
           “I’m sorry.”
           “It’s okay Abby.” Sam wrapped his arms around her, squeezing just tight enough for her to feel safe and loved. “I won't hold it against you.” He shifted on the bed hoping like hell that she wouldn't move her elbow too much or she would know exactly how his body was reacting to her being so close.
           Her hand moved from her stomach to rest on his thigh and her elbow gently brushed him. He let out a hissing, tortured sigh.
          “Sam,” she pleaded, quickly turning her whole body to face him, settling onto her knees at his side.
          “What is it Abby, are you okay?” he asked reaching out to caress her cheek. Before he could even register what was happening, she kissed him, pushing his body hard against the wall. He hesitated, but only for a moment before he returned the kiss.
STORMY SEAS - EXCERPT CHAPTER 7
            Soon after the near fight, the train headed back down the mountain and Sam and Abigail got up to walk around the car, visiting with various family members.
              “Sam how are you enjoying the cruise?” Ethan asked while Charlotte hugged her daughter.
              “I’m having a great time sir. Thank you for having me.”
              “Have you guys been getting a lot of work done?” Charlotte interrupted, looking at both of them.
              “We have,” Abigail assured her.
              “Since when do publishing companies pay their marketing execs to partake in hanky panky?” they heard Jackson ask as he walked up behind them. Abigail felt his hand on her shoulder and swung her elbow back, landing square in his stomach. “Asshole,” she murmured.
              “Damn Abby,” Jackson said, coughing a bit. “Since when can’t you of all people take a joke?”
               Abigail turned to her brother. “Since you stopped being funny.” She threw him a dirty look and walked away.
              “Hey, I’m still funny,” he called after them.
              “Butt hurt isn’t attractive on you baby brother.” Abigail called back.
              Sam stopped her mid stride. “So I take it, his joking didn’t always bother you?”
              Abigail sighed. “No, it didn’t. I actually love his warped sense of humor, but I haven’t been exposed to it for so long and so much has changed. I, I probably shouldn’t be so hard on him huh?”
              “Yeah, you should probably lighten up just a little,” Sam agreed. He pulled her close for a hug. “It’s okay Abby, you’ll get back into the swing of things.”
              "For the first time ever, I actually believe that,” she smiled pulling out of the embrace. “Thanks to you.”
STORMY SEAS - EXCERPT CHAPTER 6
          Thomas tugged on her braid the same way he had when they were younger. “You’re alive Abby, therefore you are the bravest woman I’ve ever known.”
          “He’s right,” Sam agreed. “You stopped living your life Bibi, but you never once even contemplated not living anymore. That took courage.”
          Abby’s focus zeroed in only on Sam and she smiled, tears shining in her eyes. “Because I always hoped that there was something worth living for. That someday I would be able to participate in life again.”
           Sam leaned forward momentarily resting his forehead on hers. “I know," he said softly. He pulled back, looking into her eyes. "Every single day of the last few years I did everything in my power to let you know that there is so much out there to live for. I needed you to live Abby, for you, and for me because I loved you. I thought I’d lost the battle, I thought you would be locked away inside yourself forever. And here you are, learning to live your life again. God Sweetheart, please don’t let what happened last night destroy that,” he begged softly.
          “I’m so sorry Sam.” Abigail stopped speaking as tears clogged her voice.
          A feeling of dread spread through every inch of him. She was about to tell him that she was sorry but she couldn't move past what she’d found out.
         “Don’t look like that!" she reached out to gently touch his cheek. "I’m trying to say that I’m so sorry I ever doubted you. I love you and I owe you so much.” Her breath was shaky but sure as she continued. “Nothing matters except that I love you. What happened last night should never have been an issue. Please forgive me.”
          “There’s nothing to forgive Bibi. We just move forward. Together.” He kissed her forehead, still determined to tread slowly, to let her adjust to the new things happening to them.
